How to Use Betfred Free Bets for Matched Betting (2026)

Daniel Marsh29 July 202613 min read

Betfred free bets are tokens credited after a qualifying bet, and they are stake-not-returned: a winning token pays you the profit but not the token stake back. The £50 welcome arrives as three £10 tokens for any sportsbook market and two £10 tokens that only go on a win-only accumulator of four or more selections.

That split is the whole story. Betfred advertise the biggest welcome number among the major UK books, and those two acca tokens are why the biggest number is not simply the biggest payout. This is the Betfred version of our free bets explainer, written from the side of the counter I used to work on. If the method is new to you, start with the complete matched betting guide.

Offer T&Cs change frequently and vary by channel. Always check the live terms before betting. Last verified: 29 July 2026.

Summary#

  • The live welcome is Bet £10, Get £50 for new UK customers, on a first bet of £10 or more at Evens (2.0) or greater.
  • The £50 is not one pot. It is three £10 Sports Free Bets plus two £10 Acca Free Bets, and the acca tokens need a win-only accumulator of four or more selections.
  • Every token is stake-not-returned: you keep the winnings but not the token stake, and none of it is withdrawable.
  • Most pages quote "5+ legs at 1/2 per leg" for the acca tokens. Those are Acca Flex terms. The welcome terms ask for four selections and set no per-leg odds floor.
  • Laid off, the sports tokens convert to about £23.79 and the acca tokens to about £16.62, so the £50 nets roughly £40.21 after the qualifying bet.
  • The acca tokens convert at a higher percentage than the sports ones, not lower. What they cost is four lays and about £142 of exchange liability cycled per token.
  • Tokens expire seven days after issue, deposits must be by debit card, Apple Pay or TrueLayer, and the profits are tax-free in the UK.

What are Betfred free bets?#

A Betfred free bet is a token credited after a qualifying bet and held apart from your cash balance. Because the stake is not returned, a winner hands back only the profit: a £10 token at 6.0 pays £50 of winnings, not £60. Betfred's terms say plainly that free bets cannot be withdrawn as cash and do not form part of any winnings returned. The two welcome tokens are not interchangeable either: Sports Free Bets go on any sportsbook market, singles included, while Acca Free Bets go only on a win-only accumulator of four or more selections.

The Betfred welcome offer in 2026: the terms that matter#

Terms move, so treat this as a snapshot from Betfred's own welcome offer terms rather than from an offer feed. Our current sign-up offers page tracks what is live across the market.

Three of those rows are routinely reported wrong. The acca requirement is the big one: search for it and you will be told the tokens need five or more legs at minimum odds of 1/2 per leg. Those figures belong to Acca Flex, a separate promotion for existing customers. The welcome tokens ask for four or more selections, win only, with no per-leg odds floor at all.

Timing is the second: several pages promise the tokens inside 10 hours, where Betfred say within 24 hours of settlement. The third is the qualifying bet, which must be one bet of £10 or more. Two smaller bets adding up to £10 will not qualify, and only your first valid bet counts, so a £2 test punt burns the offer.

Why the free bets are shaped this way (the bookmaker's view)#

I spent two years on a UK high-street bookmaker's customer-services desk before going full-time in matched betting in 2021, and none of this is a secret inside the building. The stake is not returned because the token was never your money. It is costed against what a new account is worth over its lifetime, and returning the stake would roughly double the price of the promotion.

The acca restriction is the more interesting choice. A promotion is priced with an expected leakage rate, meaning the share of face value that leaves as cash rather than returning as turnover. A token for a single selection leaks freely, because anyone can lay a single. A token locked to a four-fold leaks slowly, because most customers will build an acca and hope.

Step 1: place the qualifying bet (and what the Evens floor costs)#

Back a selection at Betfred at 2.0 or better and lay it at the exchange, so the result is close to neutral either way. Size the lay with the standard calculator, and use the standard oddsmatcher to find a market where back and lay sit a single tick apart. Fund the account by debit card, Apple Pay or TrueLayer first, because nothing else counts.

Worked example

Back £10 on a selection at 2.0 with Betfred. Lay the same selection at the exchange at 2.02, commission 2%. The standard calculator returns a lay stake of £10.00 and a liability of £10.20.

If the selection wins, you take £10 profit at Betfred and pay £10.20 at the exchange. If it loses, the exchange pays you £9.80 and you forfeit your £10 back stake. The qualifying loss is about £0.20 either way.

Price that floor rather than assuming it. The same £10 at a 1.20 minimum, one tick apart at 1.20 and 1.21, costs about £0.12. Betfred's entry ticket is dearer than the 1.20 floor Bet365 use, but by roughly 8p. The real cost sits in the tokens.

Step 2: convert a Sports Free Bet into cash (worked example)#

This is the baseline the other tokens get measured against. Because the token stake is never returned, higher back odds extract more of it: you sacrifice the same £10 whatever happens, but the winnings scale with the price. So place the token at odds you would not risk your own money at, then use the bonus calculator in free-bet mode.

Worked example

Back a £10 Betfred Sports Free Bet on a selection at 6.0. Lay it at the exchange at 6.2, commission 2%. The bonus calculator returns a lay stake of £8.09 and a liability of £42.07.

If the back wins, you collect £50 in winnings, the token stake having stayed with Betfred, and pay £42.07 at the exchange, leaving £7.93. If the lay wins, the exchange pays you £7.93 after commission. You retain about £7.93 either way, roughly 79% of the token, and three of them come to £23.79.

Common mistake

Putting the token on a short-priced favourite because it feels safer. A £10 token at 1.5 returns £5 of winnings, so even a flawless lay leaves you well short of the £7.93 above.

Step 3: convert an Acca Free Bet (the bit nobody explains)#

Here is where the search results stop being useful. "You cannot lay an acca free bet" is wrong. What you cannot do is lay it as one bet, because no exchange prices your specific combination of four selections as a single market.

What you can do is lay the legs one at a time. Lay leg one; if it wins, lay leg two at a larger stake, because the acca's running payout has grown; repeat to the last leg, and stop the moment a leg loses, because the acca is dead at that point. That is sequential laying, and the sequential lay calculator sizes each step in free-bet mode.

One rule decides whether it works: the legs must not overlap in time. Four matches kicking off at 3pm on one Saturday cannot be laid in sequence. A four-fold spread across Friday to Sunday can, and so can a four-race win accumulator on one card.

Worked example

Back a £10 Acca Free Bet as a four-fold, each leg at 2.0, for combined odds of 16.0 and a potential £150 in winnings. Lay each leg at 2.04 as it comes around, commission 2%.

The sequential calculator returns lay stakes of £8.48, £17.48, £36.03 and £74.26, with liabilities of £8.82, £18.18, £37.47 and £77.23. Whichever leg breaks the acca, and whether or not all four land, you retain about £8.31, roughly 83% of the token. Two of them come to £16.62.

So the acca token converts at a higher percentage than the sports token, not a lower one. That is not generosity. A four-fold forces the token to high combined odds, and a stake-not-returned token always extracts more at high odds. What it costs is work and bankroll: four lays instead of one, four settlement windows instead of one afternoon, and about £142 of liability cycled through the exchange for a £10 token, against roughly £42 for a single.

It also gives the market four chances to move against you. The first acca token I converted was a Friday-to-Sunday football four-fold, and leg three drifted from 2.04 to 2.12 in the hour after leg two settled. The £8.31 the calculator showed on Friday came back at £6.96. That drift is the tax on laying in sequence.

So what is the £50 actually worth?#

ComponentCash retained
Qualifying bet, £10 at 2.0−£0.20
3 x £10 Sports Free Bet at 6.0£23.79
2 x £10 Acca Free Bet, four-fold at 16.0£16.62
Net from a £50 headline£40.21

About 80% of the advertised number, and more cash than any £30 welcome in this series pays. Against the Paddy Power £30, which nets around £23.64, Betfred wins on pure cash. The caveat is that the £50 is not five interchangeable tokens: two need several days, a bankroll that holds £77 of liability on one leg, and the patience to keep laying while the price drifts.

Will Betfred gub you? (and the independence question)#

Eventually, quite possibly. Betfred are a mainstream book and they watch winning and offer-only accounts. Restriction usually arrives as cut stakes or withdrawn promotions rather than a closed account, but it ends the useful part of the relationship.

On the customer-services side, the accounts that drew attention first were rarely the biggest winners. They were the ones that deposited, took the welcome, and never placed an ordinary-looking bet again. Check our Betfred GVI rating for the current profile and how to avoid being gubbed for the habits that keep an account soft.

Ownership genuinely differs here. Betfred's own corporate site describes the group as privately owned, with more than 55 years on the UK high street, and no parent gambling group above it, where Paddy Power and Sky Bet sit inside Flutter and William Hill under evoke. That is the end of the claim, though. It does not mean Betfred restrict any more slowly. See connected bookmakers for what group ownership does and does not imply.

After the welcome offer: Betfred's reloads#

The welcome pays once; the reloads are what make an account worth keeping. Double Delight and Hat-Trick Heaven is the one to know, and our worked calculator example takes it apart properly. Acca Flex is the other, an existing-customer promotion needing five or more legs at 1/2 minimum per leg, and it has nothing to do with the two Acca Free Bets.

Frequently asked questions#

Can you withdraw Betfred free bets?#

No. They are stake-not-returned tokens rather than cash, and Betfred's terms say they cannot be withdrawn and do not form part of any winnings returned. A winning token sends the profit to your withdrawable balance and keeps the stake.

Can you lay a Betfred acca free bet?#

Not as a single bet, because no exchange prices your specific four-selection combination. You lay the legs one at a time as each settles, using a sequential lay calculator. On a four-fold at 16.0 that lands around 83% of face value.

What are the minimum odds for the Betfred sign-up offer?#

The qualifying bet must be £10 or more at Evens (2.0) or greater, verified on 29 July 2026. The terms set no minimum odds for the tokens themselves, so place those high rather than low.

How long do Betfred free bets last?#

Seven days from issue, sports tokens and acca tokens alike. That is short next to the 30 days several rivals allow, so plan the conversions before you trigger the offer.

Which deposit methods qualify for the Betfred welcome offer?#

A debit card, or a debit card linked to Apple Pay or TrueLayer instant bank transfer. Betfred's terms are explicit that no other method qualifies, which is a common reason free bets never arrive.

Who owns Betfred?#

Betfred is privately owned with no parent gambling group, unlike the Flutter, Entain and evoke brands. The licensed operator for betfred.com is Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, under Gambling Commission account number 39544.

The practical takeaway#

The biggest headline on the UK shelf does convert to the most cash, at roughly £40 from £50, but not in the way the advert implies. Two of those five tokens are a different job from the other three, and expecting five easy conversions is how people leave £16 on the table when the acca tokens expire on day seven.

Read the split before you claim, because it is one welcome per address with no second go. If you have never run a conversion, the tutorial walks through real free bets without asking for a card. Keep it inside the safer-gambling guidance and the 18+ rules that apply to every offer here.
