Learn what each way bets are and how they work.
An each way (EW) bet is two bets in one: a WIN bet and a PLACE bet on the same horse. You pay two stakes (e.g., £10 EW = £10 win + £10 place). If the horse WINS, both parts can win. If it only PLACES (finishes in the paid places), only the place part wins.

The bookmaker sets a fraction of the win odds for the place part (commonly 1/5 or 1/4) and a number of places (e.g., 1-3 or 1-4). These depend on race type and field size, and may change if the race conditions change (e.g., non-runners).
You can use our each way calculator to calculate your stakes and profit from each way bets.
On exchanges, the WIN and PLACE parts are separate markets. For matched betting you back both parts with the bookmaker and lay both parts on the exchange. Later, extra place offers can create an edge: if the bookmaker pays an extra place but the exchange place market does not, a finish in the ‘extra’ position can return a large profit.
• Check the EW terms (fraction and number of places).
• Match the correct PLACE market on the exchange (same places as the bookie's standard terms).
• Confirm day-of-race markets and any BOG or offer terms.
• Watch for non-runners, as place terms and Rule 4 can change near the off.
